Travellers have occupied land on a new housing development.
Between six to eight trailers at various times were reported to have been parked on land between the Maltings Lane spine road and the A12 in Witham from last Tuesday.
The land is expected to form part of the new Maltings Lane development of more than 800 houses.
A nearby resident, who did not wish to be named, said there had been confrontations between local youths and the travellers.
A spokesman for Essex Police said the force was monitoring the situation.
