A major international company behind the rejuvenation of one of Clacton's largest seafront hotels today told why it is pumping more than £1 million into the resort.

Days Inn - which has 36 properties in the UK and is expanding to 60 by the end of the year - predicts an upturn in fortunes for the town.

It was recently revealed the company had taken over the Waverley Hall Hotel and was renovating the building in time to open later this summer.

And the team responsible for the venture believes that Clacton has a great opportunity to redevelop itself as a business and tourist destination.

"Clacton is less than 90 minutes from central London and is in a position to present an alternative to business and leisure visitors disenfranchised with more traditional resorts such as Brighton and Bournemouth," said Adrian Pagdin, project manager for AJP Hotel Consulting.

"I have been impressed with the cleanliness and the sense of space in the town. It is not a huge leap to see the resort as a viable destination for corporate conferencing and entertainment tourists.

"Our business plan is to attract high spending corporate and leisure visitors to Clacton, but one hotel does not a destination make, and I hope that we can inspire other local business people to raise the collective bar."

The 53-bedroom Waverley Hall is undergoing a £1m fit-out and will open as the Days Inn this summer.
