Writtle College was awarded two medals for its two entries at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.

A display called Tell Tale Plants won a silver gilt medal while a new range of foxgloves and a millet displayed as a pyramid was awarded a silver medal.

Mick Lavelle, display co-ordinator, said: "We are all very excited with this result, especially for the students and the displays have created a lot of public interest."

Staff and students demonstrated that every plant tells a story by using 20 specials to highlight the rich cultural heritage of plant names and stories.

The colourful exhibit comprises three sections that looked at the myth and legend behind plants, showing that many native British plants have a profusion of folklore, both interesting and funny that relate to their usefulness to humanity.

A new range of seeds went on sale, supplied by Goldsmiths of California and PanAmerican Seeds of Chicago, including four new foxgloves in the Camelot series and a stunning purple leaved millet named Purple Majesty.
