Helping the visually impaired stay healthy is the aim of a special course organised by the Keep Fit Association (KFA) and being held at Hogarth Primary School in Brentwood.

Expert tutors from both the KFA and the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) are working with teachers from across the country to introduce them to new ways of approaching exercise and dance with visually impaired people.

The course is being organised by the South East Essex branch of the KFA in partnership with Sport England and many of the people taking part are Brentwood fitness teachers who want to work with visually impaired people in the future.

Branch secretary Chris Bannister, who runs two KFA courses in Havering, said: "We are always looking to extend the opportunities for people to keep fit.

"This course is specifically aimed at teaching visually impaired because we have noticed that people who have a visual impairment do face very serious difficulties taking part in movement exercise classes.

"The skills the teachers will learn will also help them deal with older people with failing eye sight who they might come across in other classes."
