The re-launched Burnham to Wallasea ferry has been greeted as a new chapter in the special relationship between the communities.

It is also hoped Lady Essex II will pull in a wealth of business benefiting services on both sides of the river Crouch.

After an absence of more than two years, the ferry will be back in service from Saturday. It will make the journey from Essex Marina on Wallasea Island to Burnham's town steps every hour.

At the official launch, chairman of Maldon District Council John Archer and his Rochford counterpart Richard Amner said they wanted the ferry link to help develop a long-lasting friendship that would extend beyond the river.

Mr Archer said: "We would really like to hold an annual event tying the two communities together, but we aren't sure what that could be. We would welcome input from local people."

They were joined by Burnham mayor Rosie Buck, who watched as the ferry docked in the town, and Essex Marina owner Robin Levy, who will run the service.
