Major improvements to the Saddlers Farm roundabout will take two and a half years to complete, but work is not likely to start for another five years.
A new timetable for the proposed work on the A13 and A130 shows building work will start in spring 2009 and be completed by winter 2011.
Before then there will be a number of public consultations and inquiries, applications for planning permission and inspectors' reports to get through.
Canvey councillor Ray Howard said he could understand public frustration at the long wait.
He said: "I know it's a long time, but these things take time to plan and organise."
