Basildon's residents have been urged to have their say on the council's vision for the future development of the district.

Among the highlights of the plan are proposals to build 8,000 new homes and return land to the green belt.

The Replacement Local Plan will carry the district through until 2015 and was approved by members last week.

Now residents have been encouraged to read the document and pass on any comments or information before it is finalised later this summer.

More than 1,000 residents had their say during a first round of consultation in 2001, and officers want even more people to have their say second time around.

Graeme Bloomer, Basildon Council head of planning services, said: "It is important to the economic and social stability of the district that we have a local plan that can deliver the council's aspirations of protecting the local environment.

"At the same time, we have to ensure we have a safe and desirable place to live and work both now and in the future."

Copies of the plan can be viewed on the council website at www.basildon.gov.uk/planning or bought from the council offices on CD-Rom for £15 or paper copy for £35.
