A top-level inquiry was launched today over alleged wrongdoing by some Southend Council officials.
George Krawiec, chief executive and town clerk ordered the investigation following a tip-off from an anonymous source.
The probe will focus on issues of salary increases to an officer. Mr Krawiec said: "We have received comments from an anonymous source about alleged misdemeanours within the council.
"On initial investigation a substantial number of these have been shown to be without substance. However, there are some matters of concern.
"To ensure that the public reputation of the council is fully protected I have instigated a formal investigation into the matters alleged and if any of them are substantiated appropriate action will be taken."
