Nightclub bosses face a wait to find out if they can keep their doors open longer.
Bosses at Route, in Colchester's Queen Street, want to keep the club open longer during the week and at weekends.
But councillors have deferred a decision, saying they want to hear what the police think of the proposals.
Residents strongly opposed the plan, which would see doors staying open until 1am Monday to Wednesday and until 2am Thursday to Saturday, instead of closing at midnight Monday to Thursday and 1am on Friday and Saturday.
