Arena Essex were made to battle hard before collecting two more league points when they overcame Eastbourne 47-43 after the visitors put up a dogged fight at the Purfleet Raceway last night.

The ever-reliable Mark Loram was again the pick of the home riders finishing with 12 point that included three heat wins whilst there was also a welcome return to form by Dean Barker who returned eight points against one of his former clubs.

Hammers promoter Ronnie Russell admitted his side had been fully stretched before completing their victory.

"Eastbourne are our close rivals and like football derby matches, often there is very little between the sides at the end and that was true in this match," said Russell.

For the visitors, David Norris reeled off four heat wins but the Eagles were weakened by the loss of former Hammer Joonas Kylmakorpi.
