Engineering chiefs today vowed the Pitsea flyover will not be closed during refurbishment work.

The vital repair work to tackle corrosion will be starting on July 19. The first phase is likely to take 18 weeks and is costing £4m.

Tony Ciaburrro, head of highways and transportation at Essex County Council said: "There is no immediate danger of this thing falling down, but the longer we leave it the greater the risk of something serious happening.

"Traffic is a big concern. There are going to be delays but the road is not going to be shut."
