Organsiers of an annual charity cycle in Billericay are hailing this year's event as the biggest and best ever after the amount of cyclists participating increased three-fold.

The Life Cycle 4 attracted more than 300 keen cyclists of all ages and raised thousands of pounds for the Orchid Cancer Appeal.

Crowds of cyclists made their way around the Essex countryside in the sunshine on Sunday as they completed the three routes on offer of 19, 36 and 100miles.

The event started and finished in Lake Meadows and organisers said they were 'astounded' at the amount of participants after last year's event attracted 98 cyclists.

The exact amount raised is not yet known, but £5,300 was raised from the entry fees alone.

Event organiser, Mark Stanbury, said: "This ride has really come of age and it is being recognised as a major ride. Cyclists came from all around the area and we had people from as far as London and Kent join in."

Founder of The Orchid Cancer Appeal and testicular cancer survivor, Colin Osborne, said: "It looks as if we will raise as much as £10,000 which will help The Orchid Cancer Appeal to fund further research and awareness about these potentially fatal diseases. We are already looking to make LifeCycle 5 even bigger in 2005."
