Bouncers at a Billericay pub will today demand ID from punters to stop a repeat of trouble which broke out after England lost to France on Sunday.

As fans stream into Quilters pub this afternoon to watch the second England group game against the Swiss, pub bosses will keep a register of everyone who enters.

The move comes after an agreement with police who originally wanted the pub closed for today's crucial match.

Manager Martin Palmer said: "There were nearly 600 people here on Sunday and 570 were well behaved.

"A small group of idiots, who will never be returning here again, caused trouble."

The pub will be insisting on proof-of-identity to ensure all the names are genuine. There will also be six doorstaff on hand should anyone object.

Mr Palmer said: "We just want people to have a good time, scream, shout and cheer, and create an atmosphere that is fun for everyone. We won't tolerate any troublemakers whatsoever."

Nine police cars were sent to Billericay after Sunday's game when rowdy supporters started smashing up cars and fencing outside the pub.
