Police are taking new steps in a bid to crack down on home burglaries this summer.
Thurrock police have launched Operation Handiwork, which will see them distributing a picture of a burglar's footprint to residents' homes which have been left unsecured.
Along with the footprint they will leave a letter explaining the dangers of burglaries where raiders sneak in through open windows.
Crime reduction officer Bob Shoesmith, of Thurrock police, said: "This sort of burglary is on the increase again in the hot weather.
"While I appreciate on a hot evening it is desirable to have a flow of fresh air through the house, it is not advisable to leave windows or doors open allowing easy access to your premises."
