Teenagers are turning South Woodham parks into no-go areas by holding night-time drinking sessions in them, a resident has claimed.

Youngsters congregating in Compass Gardens are making the park, next to Saltcoates, an area which other residents are frightened to use said one woman, who asked not to be named.

She fears the current curfew banning under-16s and large groups from the town centre at night has pushed underage drinking elsewhere.

''Kids were openly sitting on benches drinking from beer bottles next to the children's play area in Compass Park on Friday night,'' said the woman.

A spokesman for Chelmsford Council said: ''We have been liaising with the police in South Woodham Ferrers to increase patrols to curb anti-social behaviour in Saltcoates Park and Compass Gardens and we report any vandalism that occurs."
