A pupil at a Witham school fell from a tree he was climbing and impaled his hand on railings below him.
A fire engine from the Witham station and a fire rescue tender from Colchester were called to the John Bramston School in Spinks Lane, Witham, at 1pm yesterday.
They found the pupil had impaled his hand on railings that run around the school field, and spent about 20 minutes freeing him.
After being freed, the 15-year-old boy was airlifted by Essex Air Ambulance to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, where he was said to be in a stable condition.
