A minor surgery clinic which was set up at Maldon's hospital last year has been hailed a great success.

The unit, which was established at St Peter's Hospital to take some of the strain off local hospitals, was set up by Maldon and South Chelmsford Primary Care Trust (PCT) under the leadership of general practitioner Donald McGeachy.

In the year ending March 31 this year, he performed 211 minor operations at the weekly clinic.

"We do all sorts of minor procedures, such as small skin cancers and all the lumps and bumps," said Dr McGeachy, who has referrals from all over the PCT's area.

"It provides a good service for the patient. Before we opened, people would be referred to a hospital clinic and that could take three months.

"We aim to have a one-stop clinic and manage to see people within a couple of months, which is much quicker for the patients."
