Thirteen might be unlucky for some, but that was not the case at the Essex Trophy Karate competition for members of Rayleigh-based Shin Gi Tai Shotokan Club.

They collected 13 individual medals and gained a deserved second spot in the overall competition.
Seven-year-old Josh Cullingham, Sarah Jones, 16, and 18-year-old Lee Millbourn won the golds. Silver medals for kata went to Thomas Blackburn (12), Daniel Spicer (13) and 16-year-old Emma Be'ard.
Kumite second spots were gained by Abby Harding (14) and 15-year-old Stuart Gregory.
Bronze kumite medals went to Lauren Gregory (12) and Thomas Blackburn, while Lauren, Stuary Gregory and Abby Harding collected team silver.
