Walsall have joined the race to snap up Colchester United's out-of-contract goalkeeper Simon Brown.

The yo-yo Black Country club, relegated from the Nationwide League Division One at the end of last season, have lined up alongside Scottish Premier League outfit Hibernian, plus Crewe Alexandra and Swansea, to sign the 27-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur trainee.

The Saddlers' player-manager Paul Merson is eyeing-up Brown - the U's 2002-03 Player-of-the-Year and last season's Away Player-of-the-Year - as replacement for the highly-rated James Walker who has moved to West Ham United.

Brown, who is hoping to thrash out a new deal with Colchester, told the Evening Gazette: "I am flattered to be attracting so much attention.

"But I'm still in negotiations with the gaffer (U's boss Phil Parkinson) about a new contract to stay at Layer Road."
