Competitors in Sunday's Essex Youth Games will have a date with a long-serving athletics superstar.

For high-jumper Dalton Grant, who is due to represent Britain at the Athens Olympics, will be guest of honour on the day.

Grant, a Commonwealth Games champion and European Championship bronze medalist, is also a leading figure in our bid to win the 1012 Olympics for London.

The BAA Stansted-sponsored Games will see Southend defending the title they won in impressive style last year.

Once again the main site for the majority of activity will be the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre in Eastern Avenue.

Warriors pool in Warrior Square, Southend, will be used for the swimming competition and Warners Bridge hosts hockey and rugby.

There are nine sports involved this year with age groups ranging from nine to 15.

Athletics, basketball, girls' cricket girls' football, hockey, netball, tag rugby, swimming and tennis will all be contested.

Additional activities on the day include an Essex FM roadshow along with inflatables, Sony Play Station 2 and an outdoor basketball sports court activity zone led by the RAF.
