John McGreal's departure to Championship rivals Burnley has come as a surprise to Ipswich Town boss Joe Royle.

The out-of-contract Blues defender agreed terms on a three-year-deal with the Clarets yesterday.

Royle, who is currently out in Portugal as a co-commentator at the European Championships, said: "I have been told about the reports, but have heard nothing official.

"John is a free agent and although we have offered him a new deal he can talk to who he likes.

"If Burnley have presented him with a three-year deal then I would say it's likely the move will happen."

Despite being sorry to leave Portman Road, the pull of the north-west was too much of a for temptation the 32-year-old to turn down.

He said: "I'll be sad to leave Ipswich after five years as that's where I played the best football of my career.

"But because of the geography, I've decided to move back up north as I'll only be an hour's drive from home."
