Adam and Melanie Fincher said the discovery was particularly ironic because they have suffered for months from post going missing.
Mrs Fincher said: "I was worried someone would just come along and take the mail."
The couple, of Riffams Court, Basildon, said their post has been consistently left undelivered or posted to the wrong address for the past two months.
In relation to the postbag left outside the couple's home, a spokesman for Royal Mail, said: "It is not Royal Mail's policy to leave mail unattended at any point.
"We will be conducting an investigation into this matter."
However, they deny that their delivery system is at all unreliable.
