Artist and designer Joyce Pallot has died.

Born in Brightlingsea in 1912, Joyce Pallot was perhaps best known in the area for the concrete mural reliefs which adorn a number of Colchester's pedestrian subways. They were created along with her late husband Henry Collins.

They were commissioned by Colchester Council following a number of high profile works the pair had been asked to do across the country for such stores as Sainsbury's and British Home Stores.

Educated at the Colchester High School, Joyce went on to study industrial art and design at Southend and Colchester schools of art.

It was while at Colchester in 1932 that she met artist Mr Collins, who she married in 1938.

That was the beginning of a dynamic and creative partnership which was to last for more than 60 years before Henry died in 1994.

The couple worked on a number of important projects, including the 1951 Festival of Britain and Expo 70 in Japan.

As well as the murals, Joyce was a keen painter and was a founding member of the Colchester Art Society, where she became a leading exhibitor for more than 40 years.

She died last month at the Old Rectory Residential Home, Lexden, where she had lived for the past ten years.
