Pensioners and residents last night failed in their desperate bid to keep the George Hurd Centre where it is.

Twenty people formally asked Basildon Council to reconsider plans to move the elderly people's day centre from Fauners, Basildon, to open space in Audley Way, while more than twice as many watched proceedings from the public gallery.

They felt that consultation was insufficient, that petitions were ignored, that other options were not properly considered and that councillors had made the decision based on estimates rather than real facts on costs.

However Stephen Horgan, the council's cabinet member for community development, maintained that the decision was properly taken.
