A stranger forced a woman to stop her car then tried to get in next to her.
The terrifying incident happened in Cowdray Avenue, Colchester, and police today appealed for witnesses to help identify the man.
Acting Det Sgt Mike Sheeran, of Colchester CID, said: "The woman had just dropped her husband off at work and was on her way home.
"She had just passed Homebase when a male stood in the middle of the road and caused her to stop her vehicle then tried to get in.
"Luckily for the lady, the passenger door was locked. The man didn't say anything but obviously it scared the living daylights out of her."
Anyone with information about the incident, at about 9.10am on Friday, should call police on 01206 762212.
