A teenager convicted at crown court was arrested as soon as he stepped outside following the hearing.

Dean McDermott received a 140-hour community punishment order when he appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on Thursday. He had admitted handling stolen goods.

On stepping outside, police officers were waiting to arrest him because he had failed to appear at court for another matter.

The 19-year-old, of Lee Road, Dovercourt, spent a night in custody and then admitted criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon, at Colchester Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The court heard he smashed a window with a claw hammer at a home in George Street, Harwich, on February 21.

Christian Miekle, prosecuting, said McDermott was involved in an argument with the occupants of the home earlier in the evening.

"He thought he'd take the hammer back to defend himself, but said he wouldn't have hit anyone," he said.

The teenager was given an extra 40 hours on his community punishment order and ordered to pay £50 compensation and £50 towards costs.

For failing to appear, which he also admitted, he was given one day in custody, deemed served.
