Warnings have once again been issued about the dangers of playing near fires after a boy was burned by a bonfire which had got out of control.

The incident happened in the back garden of a house in Bohun Close, Great Leighs, at 1.30pm on Saturday when fuel flashed back on to the 11-year-old, causing burns to his head, arms and upper body.

Another 12-year-old boy who was playing at the bonfire escaped injury.

Paramedics reached the scene within eight minutes and the injured boy was taken by ambulance to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, where there is a specialist burns unit.

His injuries are not described as life threatening but will require further treatment.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said it could have been a lot worse and again stressed it is not safe for children to play near bonfires.
