The funeral service will take place tomorrow of great cricket lover Ronald Martin Holmes, who died earlier this month at the age of 72.

He was a founder member of Rayleigh Fairview Cricket Club, who celebrated their 50th anniversary last summer, a patron of Leigh and social member of both Westcliff and Hadleigh Clubs.

He was a regular visitor to Chelmsford to watch Essex in action and was able to recall Australia scoring 700 runs in a day against the county at Southchurch Park.

Mr Holmes was also a long-serving member of Boyce Hill Golf Club, where he was captain in 1988.

He leaves behind a devoted wife of 48 years, Shirley, his three sons and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11am at St Margaret's Church, Leigh. All are welcome and the service will be followed by a private family committal at Southend Crematorium.

Family flowers only are requested with donations if desired to the British Heart Foundation, c/o S Stibbards and Sons, Hadleigh.
