Claims that a town has a higher-than-average number of drink-drivers have been questioned.
Wivenhoe mayor Peter Hill spoke out against the claims by Essex Police, as revealed by the Gazette last month.
Wivenhoe community police officer, PC Steve May, told the town council last night that new figures collected showed relatively few cases of drink-driving.
He told councillors that during the month of October, 160 people in Wivenhoe were stopped by the police and given a breath-test.
PC May said: "Out of these 160, only three tested positive after the road-side test. Two out of these three drivers were charged with drink-driving after a further test at the police station."
He said the results showed a "low number" of drink drivers in Wivenhoe.
Mr Hill said: "I think these results show that Wivenhoe does not have a problem with drink-driving any more than anywhere else.
