Police have praised elderly Maldon residents for refusing to allow bogus callers into their homes.
Suspicious callers were foiled at seven addresses in Maldon and Southminster to the delight of officers.
In Maldon a man claiming to be from BT and needing to check a bill knocked at the flat of an 85-year-old woman in Orchard Close.
She refused to let him in and phoned to alert a neighbour of his call. Police found he went to three other flats using the same story but all denied him entry.
Crime Reduction Officer Ray Stannard said: "I'm pleased to say all of them had the sense not to let him in. He was obviously up to no good."
In Southminster on Friday a man driving a white Transit van called on three homes in Scalby Road.
He used different excuses, including asking if a van was for sale and whether land near the houses was being used. None of the homeowners allowed him in.
