A hotly disputed try in the dying moments of the game handed Basildon a vital 10-6 victory at London Four North East championship rivals Westcliff.
Until this point Westcliff, who were level on points with leaders Basildon before the game, had been clinging on to a 6-3 lead and looked good for taking the crucial league points.
Rochford took over the leadership of London Four North East with a crushing 34-0 win at Mersea Island.
In a six try bonanza the visitors simply outclassed Mersea with their superior back play and marvellous defence against a battering Islandpack.
