On the 30th anniversary of the event, hundreds of shoppers packed the Chelmsford street for the annual turning on of the Christmas lights.

Father Christmas entered the road in a horse-drawn carriage accompanied by Chelmsford Mayor Ian Wright.

Santa led the procession which saw Christmas trees above the shops come on as the carriage passed.

Brian Pawsey, chairman of Moulsham Traders, said the event was very well supported.

"Each year we add a few more lights to make it brighter and better. It is one of the biggest displays paid for privately. The council does support us but the traders raise most of the money to pay for it."

The road was closed for most of Saturday and street entertainers were on hand to keep the crowds entertained until the lights switch-on at 5pm.
