Brightlingsea's vicar has said to use paths for burials in a graveyard would show a lack of respect for the dead.
Unususal sight - the consistory court sitting in All Saints Church, Brightlingsea.
The Rev Richard Salenius stressed his view that the All Saints' churchyard is full and should close at a Consistory Court hearing yesterday.
He told the Chancellor of the Diocese of Chelmsford, George Pullman QC, presiding over a hearing at the church, that space the town council says can be used is not practical.
Mr Salenius and the Parochial Church Council (PCC) applied to the Home Office to have the site officially closed for further burials, but were refused.
The graveyard has, however, been closed to further burials unoffically since February 2003. The hearing was called to establish if the churchyard should be closed.
The hearing continues.
