A man has been jailed for carrying a 3ft-long sword.
Robert Fraser was stopped by police late at night as he was carrying a sword and two lock knives on the Avenue of Remembrance in Colchester, a court heard.
Fraser, of West End Road, Colchester, told police he had collected the sword and was taking it home.
Roger Brice, mitigating, said Fraser was not brandishing the sword, but was carrying it wrapped in two bin liners and sealed with thick adhesive tape.
He had collected it from his partner's house after they had split up. Mr Brice said 36-year-old Fraser had planned to carve the handle of the sword, which was why he had the two 3cm knives.
Fraser, a serving prisoner, admitted possessing the sword and the two lock knives on August 9.
Colchester magistrates yesterday ordered Fraser to serve one month to run concurrently with the sentence he is already serving.
