St Andrew's Primary School, Mathews Close in Halstead and St Andrew's Primary, Church Road, Bulmer, have won £300 each after collecting old Yellow Pages.

Third place went to Powers Hall Infant School in Spa Road, Witham, which received £100 and a bronze certificate.

Yellow Pages will also be dedicating a tree in a Woodland Trust wood to St Andrew's Primary in Halstead as they collected the most directories overall.

For the last six weeks, ten school in the Braintree district have been competing in the challenge, which encourages them to collect old directories.

For every pound of prize money Yellow Pages awards to schools, a matching pound is given to the Woodland Trust to help protect native woodland.

Roger Walters, Braintree Council cabinet member for the environment, said: "Residents of the district have had an impressive record for recycling and the Yellow Woods Challenge is yet another way to improve the environment for everyone.
