A plan has been thrashed out to deliver a much-needed community stadium for Colchester within two years.
Colchester Council and Colchester United bosses thrashed out a deal yesterday to get the Cuckoo Farm project off the ground.
Leader of the council, John Jowers, and chief executive Adrian Pritchard tabled their top-secret proposal in a private meeting.
Mr Jowers said an agreement was made which could see league football played at the stadium by the start of the 2006/7 season.
He said: "We have a route now to deliver the stadium sooner rather than later."
U's chief executive Marie Partner said the Gazette's seven-week campaign had played a big part in the progress. More than 8,000 have signed our petition.
