A fearless shopper was injured as he tackled a gang of fleeing robbers who were armed with baseball bats and a shotgun.
The scene of the raid
The man intervened after a group of between four and six men went into Lighters post office and newsagent in Highwoods Square, High Woods, Colchester.
They smashed the glass separating customers from staff. A witness banged on the door of the nearby Tesco store for help. The have-a-go hero ran out through an emergency exit and tried to stop the men getting away.
One of the raiders hit him on the head and arm with a baseball bat, causing minor injuries.
Then the gang, who were all wearing balaclavas and dark clothing, got into a silver Saab 913 car and drove off.
Police said it was not known yet what they had taken, but workers in the post office at the time were left suffering from shock after their ordeal.
Anyone with information should call Colchester police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
