A controversial scheme to knock down a village pub and develop a new one on the site has been thrown out, despite fears that the decision could be difficult to defend on appeal.

The Lions Den in Little Clacton Road, Great Holland

Tendring councillors last night rejected plans to replace the Lions Den in Little Clacton Road, Great Holland, with a new pub and restaurant.

And officers warned they could face costs being awarded against the council if they lost any future challenge.

The application also included the owner's accommodation and car parking.

Frinton and Walton Town Council opposed the project and 343 residents wrote in to Tendring Council against it. Many of them clapped as members of the committee refused the scheme by eight votes to six.
