Witham's long-awaited 24-hour medical centre - scheduled to open in under two weeks - faces a delay until next spring.

The new facility - known as a primary care centre - was touted to be up and running on December 1. The Witham, Braintree and Halstead Care Trust has been in negotiations to take over part of the town's Old Bridge Hospital site for the new minor injuries unit since last year.

The news was met with disappointment by Trust non-executive director and district councillor Phil Barlow.

"It's disappointing for the Trust, but it's also massively disappointing for the residents of Witham to get so close to what they think is the opening date, only to see it slipping away."

Paul Collard, estate manager for the care Trust, said: "They had trouble finding new premises for some of its staff. But I understand they are going to be moving out on January 6th or 7th.

"Following that we'll have some alteration work to do to prepare it for our use, which should take about five weeks."
