A former RAF chef crippled by illness has welcomed the publication of an independent report acknowledging the existence of Gulf War Syndrome.

Carl Stratford, of Burstall Close, Clacton, served with 18 Squadron in Saudi Arabia between January and March 1991. Like many who fought in the conflict to liberate Kuwait, he has suffered a range of illnesses and has not been able to work since 1999.

An independent inquiry, headed by Lord Lloyd of Berwick, concluded the health problems experienced by some 6,000 soldiers can be attributed to their service in the Gulf War.

Mr Stratford, 38, said: "I am relieved that someone has finally said that Gulf War Syndrome does exist."
