Colchester High Street will be closed to cars all day when the Queen visits.
Police have decided to shut the road before the morning rush-hour on Thursday until crowds have dispersed after Her Majesty's departure, to ensure public safety.
But they plan to keep Head Street and North Hill open for as long as possible before the royal party arrives.
Passengers who usually get on or off buses in High Street will have to go to Colchester bus station instead, but services heading down North Hill will be unaffected for most of the day.
Between 11am and 4pm, buses approaching from the direction of North Station will reach the bus station via a diversion route of Balkerne Hill, Southway, Brook Street and East Hill.
But, outside those times, services will use the High Street, without stopping to drop off or pick up passengers.
