Demonstrators braved cold rain and winds to protest against a council decision to ban swimming in Maldon's Marine Lake.

Demonstrators braved cold rain and winds during the protest.

About 55 people 34 dressed as lifeguards gathered by the lake, in Promenade Park, yesterday to vocalise their frustrations with chants of "save our lake" and "no duck pond".

Members of local action group Friends of the Prom, in mock lifeguard gear, called for Maldon District Council to avoid being "over-cautious and bogged down in bureaucratic red tape".

Member Bob Wyness, 56, wearing a Victorian-style bathing suit, said: "We want the lake back for swimming. It's been that way for 100 years, we just have to find the right package to make it work.

"All these people have turned out today and at the public meeting before, it just shows how large public support is for having this lake open for swimming."
