Raiders broke into a popular tourist attraction by smashing a window.
Baffled - Andy Rutter, secretary of the Harwich Society at Harwich Lifeboat Museum
They struck at the Harwich Lifeboat Museum, in Wellington Road, on Wednesday night.
When they smashed the window, a picture inside was damaged and another picture was stolen in the burglary.
Neither item, which depicted moments in the lifeboat's history, had much value in money, but both were cherished mementoes.
Andy Rutter, secretary of the Harwich Society, which maintains the museum, was upset at the loss of the pictures and the damage caused to the attraction.
He said: "Of course, we don't keep money in there so one wonders what the object of the exercise was."
