One of Maldon's largest crowd-pulling events is hoping to receive sizeable financial backing from the council to make next year's the biggest and best ever.

Preparations for The Real Music Festival 2005, touted as the replacement to the town's Prom Fantasia, are already under way.

But an extra £20,000 is needed in sponsorship to guarantee even better attractions such as a classical event, bigger-named artists and a free community day to showcase local talent.

Farleigh Hospice, which has organised the event for the past four years and benefits financially, is on-board for next year's event. It has already committed £25,000 to the weekend which is expected to cost £45,000.

A spokesman for the event said: "Despite its success, the return on the investment from Farleigh Hospice into the event over the past four years is at odds with the amount of financial risk involved in running such a large open-air event."
