Colchester's police chief has said today he would be delighted to get extra community support officers (CSOs) after Essex was allocated a further 41.

The Gazette revealed yesterday that the Home Office is to pay an extra £50 million for 1,600 more CSOs, bringing the national total to 5,500.

Essex Police is to get 41 of these and the Home Office will provide 100 per cent funding for the first 15 months, followed by funding of at least 75 per cent in 2006/07.

Top level talks will now take place to decide where in Essex the 41 CSOs that have been allocated will work.

A spokesman for Essex Police said the force's chief officers will be holding talks with the divisional commanders of each borough in the county.
