A hero policeman wrapped a teenage girl in a bear hug as she threatened to jump to her death in Colchester.

PC Chris Allwood was just three days into his return to the beat after a spell as acting sergeant when the drama unfolded at 12.30pm yesterday.

He raced across town to aid the 15-year-old after she had been spotted sitting on a ledge at the top of the steps leading down to the Vineyard Street car park.

As he approached the scene, the courageous cop realised the girl had not seen him - and decided to act fast.

PC Allwood said: "There were two women talking to her when I arrived. They had managed to keep her attention and I saw she did not know I was there, so I just put her in a bear hug from behind and pulled her over the railings."
