A teenager skipped school because he was being bullied, a court heard.

The 13-year-old boy from Colchester made few appearances at school between February and July this year. His mother, whose identity along with the youngster's cannot be revealed, admitted failing to send her son to school, to Harwich magistrates yesterday.

Prosecuting, Kate Miller, said: "The school and the education welfare officer tried to discuss the matter on numerous occasions. His mother didn't phone the school when he wasn't there or provide medical evidence for absence."

Mitigating, Lynne Shirley, said the boy had been assaulted at school, was suffering from depression and has medical and mental health problems.

She said: "He is a very troubled young man."

His mother was given a 24-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £70 costs.
