A group of musicians from Colchester are seeking legal advice after two top rock stars formed a new supergroup using their band name.

Tom Urzi, Scott Pearce and Michael Giaquinto used to be in Colchester group Maniac Squad, which gained modest notoriety in the mid-1990s for their rather offensive debut single.

Now based in South London, the Colchester trio formed The Chavs last year with female vocalist Angel, guitarists Paul Waterson and Steve Forster and the former drummer from 1980s group Roachford, Graham Carr.

Having played a number of gigs in the capital, and one back home at The Twist last month, the group were shocked to read that Carl Barat, of The Libertines, and Tim Burgess, of The Charlatans, had formed a new group using their name.

Tom said: "We were slightly amused at first but then there is a serious side to it. We were the first to use the name so there is already a supergroup with the name The Chavs. We are talking to our legal advisers about it."

But according to a spokesman at Carl's management company, Creation, the Colchester boys could have a fight on their hands.

He said: "We advise them to take legal advice. We have incredibly expensive lawyers who love this sort of nuisance litigation. We have a double album already recorded and due for release on March 3 and we will be vigorously defending our corner."
