A chorus of encouragement saw off the 60 or so riders of the Essex and Farmers Union Hunt as they left the Horse and Groom at Galleywood Common at 11am yesterday.
Mervyn Clarke, of the Essex and Farmers' Union, said: "We have more support now than I can remember. There was a wonderful crowd of people who all gave a rousing cheer when we left. It was very good.
"There were a couple of protesters as we went around the course but none at the meet and they caused no problems."
A police presence was visible at the meet, but officers had no cause for concern during the afternoon.
Despite the Government ban on fox hunting, which it due to come into effect in February, Mr Clarke is optimistic about the future of the blood sport.
"We are all optimistic that hunting will continue."
