Neil Danns believes that Colchester United can regain a place in the top end of the table.

Danns signed for the U's last week from Premiership side Blackburn Rovers after a successful two-month loan spell earlier in the season.

The Liverpool-born midfielder is delighted to be back at Layer Road, although he admitted being shocked at the fall down the Coca-Cola League One table Phil Parkinson's charges have taken.

He said: "It was very surprising because I know how much talent is here."

Colchester were 13th when he left, just six points off the play-offs. Today they are 18th and five points from the relegation zone.

Danns added: "Against Luton, where we drew 2-2 at their place, we showed that we can be back up there with the best.

"That was a great game. We were playing a top-of-the-table team and we were giving as good as we got."

The match was Danns' debut as a fully-fledged United player and he battled on for a full 90 minutes despite lacking match practice.

He said: "I found it tough because since I've been back at Blackburn I've only played two games.

"I've still a long way to go before I get back to full fitness.

"This was a stepping stone, so hopefully I can get back to full fitness soon.

"I'm just a bit frustrated that my fitness isn't up there fully, but it will come.
